June Is Pride Month
June is Pride month, and this year would have been the 50th year of Boston Pride. Over the last several years, we as an Affiliate have participated in Pride events like rallies and parades. But this year, we have to reflect on the realities in our country.
We are thrilled for the historic Supreme Court decision protecting LGBTQ employees under federal law. This is bittersweet knowing that the Trump administration has erased protections for transgender people seeking health care the week before. Denying trans people the basic human right to health care, especially during a pandemic, is unconscionable.
And the same week the administration announced their plan, two Black trans women– Riah Milton of Ohio and Dominique “Rem’mie” Fells in Pennsylvania– were murdered. As the nation reckons with the centuries-long issue of structural racism and violence against Black communities, Black trans women are among the most vulnerable.
The MA ACNM Executive Committee, with many of us members of the LGBTQIA community, are acutely aware of how issues of homophobia and transphobia play out in our lives and our work. We are committed to this work not just in Pride month or amid a public health and racial justice crisis but in a year-round, life-long commitment to equity, inclusion, and justice.
